Carroll County Georgia Schools Calendar

Three separate public school systems share this west Georgia county: Carroll County Schools, Carrollton City Schools and Bremen City Schools, together serving more than 21,000 students. Each adopts its own calendar, so start dates for 2026-2027 range from July 31 in Bremen to August 10 in Carrollton. Families should first work out which system their address belongs to, since a Carrollton home can border a Carroll County Schools zone on a different schedule.

School District Structure in Carroll County

Carroll is a county in Georgia (Georgia uses “county,” not parish or borough), and its public education is split across three independent systems, each governed by its own board of education:

  • Carroll County School System (Carroll County Schools) serves the parts of the county outside the Carrollton and Bremen city limits, including Villa Rica, Bowdon, Temple, Whitesburg and Mount Zion. It enrolls about 15,500 to 16,400 students at roughly 23 or 24 schools (12 elementary, 6 middle and 5 high school, per public listings). The central office is at 164 Independence Drive in Carrollton.
  • Carrollton City Schools serves the city of Carrollton, with about 5,600 students on four schools located together on a 130-acre campus. The office is at 106 Trojan Drive, and the district is a charter system known for its Trojans teams.
  • Bremen City Schools serves the city of Bremen, with four schools, and its office is at 504 Georgia Avenue South.

Leadership is in transition at the largest district. Superintendent Scott Cowart announced in March 2026 that he would retire after 16 years as superintendent, serving through June 2026 or until a successor was appointed, and Board Chairman Kerry Miller said the board would begin a search. I could not confirm who now holds the job, so check the district website. Dr. Mark Albertus is listed as superintendent of Carrollton City Schools. Each board meets in public, and Carrollton’s board approved its calendar at a regular meeting held at the Board of Education office on Trojan Drive.

Carroll is an Atlanta-area county with a mix of suburban growth near Villa Rica, a small university city in Carrollton, and rural communities such as Bowdon and Whitesburg. The three systems therefore differ in resources, bus routes and calendar choices.

Academic Calendar Structure

All three systems use a two-semester year with grading checkpoints, and all must meet Georgia’s requirement of 180 instructional days or the equivalent in hours.

For 2026-2027, calendar listings based on the district PDFs show these structures:

  • Carroll County Schools: preplanning July 29 through 31, first day of school Thursday, August 6, 2026, second semester beginning January 5, 2027, and the last day of school on May 25, 2027, with post-planning on May 26 and 27. Nine-weeks grading periods end on October 2 and later dates, with report cards on October 8 and January 7.
  • Carrollton City Schools: first day Monday, August 10, 2026. The last day for Carrollton High School seniors is May 14, 2027, and the last day for all other students across the four schools is May 19, 2027, according to the Times-Georgian.
  • Bremen City Schools: online registration begins July 9, open houses on July 28, first day Friday, July 31, 2026, first semester ending December 18, students returning January 5, 2027, and the last day on May 21, 2027, with teacher post-planning from May 24 through 28.

Several of these dates come from third-party calendar sites, so confirm them with each district. School day times differ by school and system.

School Holidays and Breaks

Break patterns differ by district, so check which system your child attends. The 2026-2027 listings show:

Carroll County Schools: Labor Day on September 7, a fall holiday October 12 through 16, a professional learning day November 2, Thanksgiving break November 23 through 27, Christmas break December 21 through 31, New Year’s Day on January 1, a teacher workday January 4, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18, a winter break February 15 through 19 that is marked as a possible inclement-weather make-up window, a professional learning day on March 19, spring break April 5 through 9, and Memorial Day on May 31.

Bremen City Schools: Labor Day on September 7, fall break October 5 through 9, Thanksgiving break November 23 through 27, winter break December 21 through January 1, mid-year planning on January 4, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18, a winter break February 15 through 19, spring break April 5 through 9, and digital learning and parent conference days on September 16 and February 10.

Carrollton City Schools: the calendar posted on its website has the full list of breaks, which I could not confirm in my research.

Exact dates change each year, so use the board-approved calendar from the right district.

How to Find the Official Carroll County School Calendars

Each district posts its own calendar. Use carrolltoncityschools.net for Carrollton City Schools and the district websites for Carroll County Schools and Bremen City Schools, and find the PDF under the district, parents or community menus. Calendars are adopted at a board meeting ahead of the school year, and the Times-Georgian reports on approvals. Be careful when searching: Carroll County, Kentucky, Carroll County, Maryland and others have school districts with their own calendars, and some of those pages came up in my research.

If you live in one county but work in another, comparing nearby calendars helps. The Candler county schools calendar page covers a small inland east Georgia district, while the Carroll county schools calendar page covers the three systems in this west Georgia county. Reading both together shows how much Georgia calendars can differ by size and region.

Individual schools also post their own event and athletic calendars, so check your child’s school page too.

Early Release Days, Teacher Workdays, and Professional Development

Teachers in all three systems report for preplanning before students return, and the calendars include student holidays that are staff days. Carroll County Schools lists professional learning days on November 2 and March 19 and a teacher workday on January 4, and Bremen lists a mid-year planning day on January 4. Bremen’s parent conference and digital learning days, on September 16 and February 10, are another type of non-traditional day. Georgia requires certain staff training, which districts schedule on these days. Early dismissals and schedule changes are announced through each district’s notification system, websites and social media, so keep your contact information current.

Emergency Closures and Weather Days

Carroll County is in west Georgia, in the Atlanta area, so closures are most often tied to severe thunderstorms, tornado warnings, flooding, occasional ice and snow, and remnants of tropical systems. Each superintendent decides on closures after consulting transportation staff and local emergency officials, which matters on hilly rural roads in the county’s western and southern areas.

Closures are posted on each district’s website and social media and sent through automated calls and messages. Atlanta stations such as WSB-TV, FOX 5 and 11Alive carry closure lists, and the Times-Georgian and local radio cover school news. Carroll County Schools builds a possible weather make-up window into its February 15 through 19 winter break, and other missed days can be made up with cushion days or by adjusting a break, with each board approving any change.

Graduation and End-of-Year Schedule

Final exams fall in the last weeks of each semester, with second-semester exams in May. Carrollton City Schools’ senior class finishes earlier than other students, with May 14, 2027 as the last day for Carrollton High School seniors, and the other schools finishing May 19. Carroll County Schools finishes May 25, with elementary and middle school report cards that day and high school report cards on May 26, and Bremen finishes May 21. Graduations are held at venues announced by each district in the spring, and families can follow grades through each system’s online parent portal.

Back-to-School and Registration Information

Families register with the system that serves their address. Bremen opens online registration in early July, with open houses on July 28 for 2026-2027, and the other systems post registration steps on their websites. Typical requirements are:

  • Proof of Carroll County residency, such as a utility bill or lease
  • A birth certificate
  • A Georgia immunization certificate and any required vision, hearing, dental and nutrition screening form
  • Records from a prior school for transfers

Supply lists are usually posted on school pages in July. Because three systems share the county, confirm your address zone before enrolling.

Special Programs and Their Calendar Implications

Most programs follow the main calendar of each system. Carroll County Schools has described itself as the largest district in the nation with National STEM Certification across all its campuses and has a G+ certification program for graduates, and its performing arts center opened in 2017. Carrollton City Schools is a charter system. High school students can take dual enrollment courses through nearby colleges, including the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, and college terms do not always match district breaks, so check with the counselor. Georgia’s Pre-K programs, alternative schools and virtual options follow their own enrollment steps.

Athletics and Extracurricular Calendar Context

High school sports are governed by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Carrollton’s Trojans, Bremen’s Blue Devils and the Carroll County Schools high school teams all begin fall practice in early August, around the first day of school, and Carrollton’s Esports coach was named GHSA’s 2025 Esports Coach of the Year. Basketball runs through winter, and spring sports follow in the second semester. With three systems and different breaks, a team’s practice days may not match a neighboring system’s holidays, so check each school’s athletic calendar.

State-Level Calendar Requirements and How Georgia Law Governs Carroll County

The Georgia Department of Education and the State Board of Education set the framework: 180 instructional days or the equivalent hours, state testing windows such as Georgia Milestones, and staff training requirements. Within that framework, each of Carroll’s three boards chooses its own start dates, break lengths and use of planning, digital learning and make-up days. That is why Bremen starts July 31, Carroll County Schools starts August 6 and Carrollton starts August 10 while all three meet the same state minimum. Georgia’s city school systems, such as Carrollton and Bremen, operate independently of the county system under state law, and each receives state funding based on its own enrollment.
